Swellendam has become well known and loved as a tourist town for its heritage sites and beautiful nature but it’s also a great adventure destination with an abundance of family and outdoor activities in Swellendam and surrounds. So, when it becomes that time of the holidays when the expensive toys that blew the children’s minds just six days ago for Christmas have lost their charm and the young ones are now accustomed to and slowly becoming bored by beach days, we say hit the road and visit Swellendam.
Even though the school holidays are nearly ending the best of summer is yet to come and if you’re looking for family fun in the sun (aka ways to keep the kids busy outdoors) Swellendam should be on your must-visit-list! Not only is our tranquil town the perfect break from the city (only a two hour drive from Cape Town) but Swellendam also offers wonderful outdoor activities for the entire family.
Horse riding, berry picking, kayaking, river rafting and even a fairy garden (for the imaginative and fanciful) are just some of the outdoor activities in Swellendam. With berry season coming to an end in middle January we highly recommend this unique summer activity for young and old.
At The Berry Guest Farm just outside of town the fun doesn’t stop with berry picking though. The adventure farm offers an array of outdoor activities and is situated in the Hermitage Valley at the foot of the Langeberg Mountain a mere 3km outside of Swellendam’s town center. Always wanted to experience farm life? Jump on up for a tractor trip across the farm. For ziplining in Swellendam this farm is the place to go. With three ziplines of which one runs over a dam (jump in the water when you’re ready) a great time is guaranteed. The blackberry maze is a must and will keep the children busy for hours. The farm has a small restaurant next to the dam where parents can enjoy cold beverages (a berry smoothy is a must) and light meals while the children tire out in the blackberry maze and jungle gym. For the family who does everything together kloofing in the Langeberg mountain (the farm is situated right at the foot of the mountain) makes for a great adventure. And of course, they didn’t forget the MTB lovers, the farm has a pump track where visitors can enjoy themselves – so remember to pack your bike.
The Berry Guest Farm welcomes day visitors – visit their website here or inquire from our reception staff when visiting Schoone Oordt. So pack your bags and come visit!
