Luxury Accommodation in Swellendam
We’ve been loving Schoone Oordt, the luxury accommodation in Swellendam, for quite a few years now. It’s a constant journey of countless building projects, revamps and restoration to turn it into and maintain its status as the best luxury accommodation in Swellendam. During winter each year we focus on giving the Grand Dame all the love and pampering she deserves. Whether it be a fresh coat of paint, restoration on the woodwork and floors or maintenance of that old head dress (the roof, that is) – there’s a lot of necessary upkeep on a historic Victorian building.
This year, however, along with the usual maintenance, we focused on refreshing and updating the rooms, the interiors were already 10 years old! Time flies so unbelievably quickly. So, it was out with the old and in with new carpets, new headboards, new pictures in the bathrooms and beautiful new cushions and linens. We also got to fix the fireplaces in Rooms 1 & 2… Those of you that have stayed in winter before would’ve known that we had smoke issues from the fireplaces in Rooms 3 & 4 underneath. We’ve put very pretty closed-combustion fireplaces in and sealed up the cavities of the old fireplaces. Fingers crossed, this is a long term fix…
We’ve kept with the Victorian look, with it’s darker furnishings and antique details but we’ve brightened up rooms with a fresh coat of paint, plush new carpets (we could just lie on those forever) and new upholstery in neutral tones. One of our favourite new pieces in the rooms has to be the gorgeous, large velour headboards. It’s not only a great comfort piece but also ties in well with the glamour of the Victorian look.
In The Conservatory we took on probably the biggest part of this year’s refurbishment.
To make more room for seating in The Conservatory we decided to take out the big (underused) fireplace. Not only do we have more seating space now, but that area has become a sweet and bit more private nook in The Conservatory – perfect for deep, early morning conversations over our continental breakfast or for romantic dinners.
Renovating is no small task especially in a building of this stature and age. However, to see the outcome of all the hard work is always an amazing feeling and a beautiful sight. Yes, even after many years of living and working here it’s still special and exciting to be part of the evolution of the Grand Dame.
So as winter in the Overberg slowly draws to an end, we are looking forward to welcoming guests into our newly done rooms in the coming high season. We are still however running a winter special until the end of September when you book directly with us. Come visit!
Thanks as always to Elana van Zyl for the great pictures of the chaos and new rooms.
