Family Activities
There are so many family activities in Swellendam to do. Whether you’re visiting Swellendam or a local looking to keep the kids entertained, the options are vast and wonderful. From horse riding to berry picking, water activities to nature walks or mountain biking. One of the most unique family activities in Swellendam has to be a visit to our town’s very own fairy sanctuary.
Yes, you read correctly. The Continent of Sulina was the home of Ian and Minky Sulin – potters and sculptors by trade. The sanctuary was established in 1991. Sulina came about as a manifestation of a promise Minky made to her angelic and fairy friends as a child. Through Ian and Minky’s love for nature a self sufficient garden came about. In their garden an array of angelic and fairy sculptures can be found. Some are hidden in the lush garden while others beautifully displayed and in waiting to be admired.
The fairy sanctuary has an enchanting playground with jungle gyms and beautiful doll’s houses. It is the perfect place to let the little ones run wild. Pack a picnic basket and enjoy the tranquility of the majestic fairy garden. The gallery is a non-profit organisation established as an outlet for fellow artists who could not find job satisfaction in the corporate world. Ian and Minky refer to it as their ‘adoption centre’ for their unique creations.
A visit to The Continent of Sulina makes for a truly unique family activity in Swellendam. Children’s fascination with the dozens of little creatures will keep them busy for ages. While those who are easily bored can play their hearts out on the playground. It is a fascinating outing. One that frees the imagination of both young and old.
